Traveling has become part of human activities since the world started. No doubt that even Jesus Christ made many journeys before he left to his father. That sounds loudly in us as humans that, we cannot do away with traveling. Be it temporal or permanent movement to a place.
Before these forms of movement to take place, one needs a form of transportation or two. There are several forms of transportation which are not limited to
1. Land/road which involves vehicles (buses, mini cars and vans etc.), Trains and trek which involves the use of the foot.
2. Air travel which involves the use of airplanes or any flying machines/objects.
3. Sea/water travel also include the use of any floating object/machines like yachts, vessels, boats, canoes, pontoons etc.
In the early month of March 2019, the world was hit by a sad news which involves the crash of one of the Ethiopian airlines aircraft killing all 157 souls onboard including the crew members. The incident has put a great fear in the air travelers especially myself. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has pus assured the safety of all air travelers. But the cause of the crash unknown hence investigated. Many were left in doubt about which mode of transportation is best and safe. In an interview conducted by Phils Travel Services, 70% of those who were interviewed preferred Land mode of transportation even though air travel still remains the fastest. Some cited an instance where the percentage of surviving is very high as some accident can be avoided as compared to airplane crashes.
But they were left in disappointment when news again hit Ghana with an accident involving two long buses on Kintampo road. Closes to 70 passengers were reported dead whilst 35 almost 35 of them got burnt beyond recognition. There was another fatal one at cape coast same day. Now the option for safest mode of transportation is null. The cause of the accidents are unknown but eye witnesses says one of the drivers might be dozing off.
CAUSE OF ROAD ACCIDENTS IN GHANA
Many known causes of road accidents in Ghana but some are obvious and preventable. Amongst the causes are Bad roads, over speeding, overloading, driving tired, driving drunk etc. some of these causes are obvious hence can be prevented. Law enforcers can beef up the enforcement. The increment of fatal accidents in Ghana has drawn of Phils Travel Services to talk about the major causes and the action plan to mitigate the causes if not eradicate.
An article published by Phils Travel Services titled ‘Lives in danger’ last year could not make it way to draw the attention of the rightful authorities in charge. The accident cause trends has changed to be the worst of occurrences in one life. Per the survey carried out, most of these gory accidents were caused by over speeding on bad roads, driving drunk and tired or under the influence of any contraband hard drugs and bad condition of vehicles etc. But the question is, ‘HOW CAN THESE BE HALTED’.
Before these gory accidents can come to an end, certain precautions and actions must be enforced.
Firstly, all vehicles must undergo thorough and series of checks before it hits the road. And also, all equipment needed in the car should be installed.
Secondly, passengers education by the driver/mate should be implemented and enforced. Severally, I have travelled with both flights and buses (all types of vehicles in general). Passengers education is always done on flights but never before on buses. The drivers will not even greet the passengers to talk of introducing himself hence the education likewise his mate. Which I think is very bad, said by one passenger onboard one of the major transport company’s bus in Ghana. At least a little education should be done as to the location of the emergency exits, how to cut the glass with the appropriate tool in case of emergencies, importance of seat belts etc.
Thirdly, vehicles that goes on a long journey like 2-3 hrs should have more than one driver. So that when one is tired, the other can take over. This strategy should closely be monitored.
Fourthly, various police barriers should be mounted at least at every 2 or 3 km intervals on major highways to check/control unnecessary speeding and other factors.
Last but not the least, drivers should be check midway to detect any signs of alcoholism or any other hard drugs that may influence the accident causes.
SUGGESTIONS AND CONCLUSION
With regards to the police officers enroute the highways should avoid all forms of bribery. When the driver defaultS, necessary actions should be taken rather than taking just something small and leave the culprit to go scot free. Fire extinguishers should always be inspected by the Ghana Fire service team not forgetting functioning seatbelts and genuine license by the Driver’s and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and National Road Safety Commission. Military officers enroute roads to monitor speed limits. Bad roads should be fixed as soon as possible.
